This morning I went out to the chicken coop with warm water I found that Kernel had slept on the water dish and now his tail was full of ice chunks.
Since he has been sleeping on the water a lot (I'm going to have to work something up to stop this) I decided not just to bring him inside and melt the ice, but to cut of the feathers covered in ice. Hopefully cutting them off will stop him from getting soaked again.
Not sure if this is suggestion will be much help but you could try using something like the snugglesafe microwave heatpad (it's plastic and they usually slide it into a padded cover--but you could leave it out of the cover and set the pan on-top of it) it's supposed to stay warm for 10 or so hours....it might make a difference -- at least enough to keep the water from freezing, maybe?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it. The other thought we had been having is a birdbath deicer, but that would require running an cord out to the coop. So this might work without having to worry about running a cord.
