Mice.......

Are a pain, I don't like (wild) mice, they ruin clothing and food and in general just make pests of them self's, but anyway to my story, I was hauling chicken feed to the coop last night, which awoke all the chickens how where sure that because they had, had no feed (but free-ranged) all day that they where dieing. I dumped the feed into the metal garbage, and went to dispense feed to the extra roosters and then I went back into the coop to feed the flock. I grabbed the feeder which the flock had flipped on to its side. When I pick up the feeder I always shake it out to knock out dust, but out dropped two little baby mice. Here is a picture off the internet (not mine) of a baby mouse who looks similar in color and age:

about a second later one of my Black Australorp grabbed one and ran off with it (I'm pretty sure it got eaten) and the other one got stepped on and pecked by a couple of the hens. But not killed. The poor thing was crying and was in pain, I thought that a hen (or hens) was going to eat it but none did. I could not let it suffer so I killed the poor thing by crushing it with a brick. And before someone says that was cruel, let me say that I do feel bad about it, but I knew it was going to die and I refused to leave leave it to slowly die in pain.

Meet the Roosters

I have two main flock roosters Chipmunk and Red. Here are their stories.

This (above) is Chipmunk he is a Easter Egger rooster. He was ordered from ideal poultry as a girl, as it turned out he was miss sexed meaning I got my flock rooster. He is wary of me and gets the point as long as he behaves he gets to stay. Also he carries at least one blue egg gene.

This is Red, who is Chipmunk's son. The main reason he is sticking around is because he is pretty, afraid of threatening me, and because he possible carries the blue egg gene. He was only one of two Easter eggers to survive past 4 weeks old, and all because he broke his toe.
Red and 3 other Easter Egger chicks

I had moved all 20 chicks (hatched in my incubator) to a chicken tractor outside and on about the 3rd or 4th day out there he broke his toe so I brought him and a White Leghorn/Easter Egger cross inside.
Red when I was trying to fix his toe.

It turns out that was the night the raccoon chose to attack. I went from 20 chicks to 13 chicks in one night. All Easter Eggers in the tractor except a pure white one where killed. Everyone got moved to my main pen for safety that day. Oh and if your wondering no his toe did not heal properly, he would dunk his foot in water and remove the bandage. But he gets along fine with a broken toe.

So that is the story of my Roosters.

They came!!!

My copies of Catching Fire and Mocking Jay arrived yesterday!
I read Catching Fire yesterday and finished Mocking Jay today. I have to say I liked The Hunger Games the best out of the 3.

Eggs, tomatoes, and Graves

First the eggs I collect 9 from the flock and washed 5 dozen to sell tomorrow. While cleaning I found one of those eggs that makes me love having chickens:

But this morning after letting the chickens out (they free-range), I collected tomatoes. I only have cherry tomatoes this year so one harvest is tiny. Here is todays  harvest with one of the cookies my mom made yesterday:

But todays bad news is that one of our cats Dot has pasted away. We had thought we had lost him because we had not seen him in a couple days. But this afternoon my sister when walking around found his body and now he is buried on the same land as his ancestors. He was know as our dog ,Nick's baby because as a kitten he had tried to nurse form him and would rub up against him at any chance.

Good-bye Dot

Book order!

Because I loved The Hunger Games, I just ordered both Catching Fire and Mocking Jay (hardcover copies) for $22.92 including shipping! I checked both amazon and Borders, and both were cheaper then book store prices but amazon was cheaper, and I should be getting my books in 3-5 business days. Also it's saying that they probably ship tomorrow!

GM food? and Books

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2010/09/08-1#comment-1606930
and if you look up GM foods you come up with a zillion links/stories on it. My current thoughts on it are as long as they label anything GM genes in it clearly, I don't care what anyone else is eating, what is anyone/everyone else thinking?

I finished The Witching Hour last night at about 10:55, started and finished The Hunger Games. Which means I need to get my hands on the next two books in both series. I can most likely get Lasher and Tatlos from my dad in a week or two.

But I'm going to have to buy Catching Fire and Mocking Jay.

Etc......

It was confirmed that my former teacher killed him self September 4th  .

I'm on page 854 of Witching Hour (total there is 1038 pages), and I bought my self a copy of The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins:

Which I plan to read next.

My garden is doing good, 3 watermelons 2 of which I think will be harvestable, I have at least 2 full size bottle gourds and a bunch of little ones, cherry tomatoes that are riping (I have harvested some), multi-color carrots, and lots of sunflowers.

The chickens are having fun, my mom was cleaning out cabinats and fed the chickens anything that was ok but out of date.

Here is a picture of my extra roosters who should be leaving soon (taken last night):

Hi everyone!

Welcome to my blog I'm Caitlin (Cat). I made this blog to share about my animals, gardens, reading, and anything else I feel like taking about. I have (currently) 26 chickens, 8 cats, guppies, turtles, and the family dog. I have 2.5 gardens and I am a very fast reader. So hello everyone!

Now I need to figure out how to post pictures on here....
